Netflix: Good News in the Binge
Eight years ago, I came home after another long day. I was exhausted. The job that I thought I was wired to do was draining more than just energy from me.
I needed to laugh. I needed to giggle. I needed some sort of relief.
Enter Scrubs.
By no means the greatest comedy ever, it's humor is not deep nor subtle but it met me in my moment of need. I laughed, I somehow found connection between the protagonist and myself - his struggle and longings.
And for that, to this day the series holds a very special place for me.
So I began my binge of the series. Yet unlike today, I was not able to stream the show online; instead I was able to piece together a 3 hour straight block of time between 4 networks each day to get my fix. This went on for some time as I finally made the decision to get myself out of the context I was in that was causing so much pain. Now, there is a danger in binging of any kind. There are always larger questions to be asked if these moments become lifestyle choices. But might there be good news to be found in binging on a television show or streaming Netflix for day?
I would say yes because in doing so you discover you might just need some thing. That you...
You might just need a break.
Some times we are drawn to inactivity and 'mindless' activities because we are not recognizing the signs in our lives that we need rest. Yes, rest is that important and some of us can't simply be still and quiet so having some thing to engage can be helpful.
You might just need to be reminded of a good story
In recent years, there has been a movement of people encouraging us all to live better stories. While true, we often lose track to even what a good story looks like. We forget what resolution is and what pursuit, love, and perseverance can be. Even in the darkest of dramas, we are reminded that some things are not right and we must actively and constantly choose to act.
We continually need to hear, see, and watch others stories - for when we do so we find connection between theirs and ours.
You might just need to laugh
In the darkest of times, laugher can be the best medicine. Laughter can also connect us with others as we share in a common experience - reminding us that we are not alone.
There are countless other You might's that I could add and that come to your mind. As with many things there is healthy tension in our choice of actions and we must always be aware of this - allowing others to also remind and challenge us when we might have taken things too far.
But there is always Good News to be found. Can you find it?
